A manual changeover requires an operator to select the supply. An automatic system detects supply conditions and coordinates starting and transfer through compatible controls. A standard changeover must prevent unintended parallel connection or backfeeding between supplies.
A generator may start correctly but fail to supply the building if the transfer system is not operating. Diagnosis can include supply sensing, start signals, controller settings, interlocks, contactor or breaker operation, wiring and feedback signals.
Functional testing checks the required start, transfer, return and shutdown sequence. Timers, voltage and frequency limits must be appropriate for the equipment. Testing may interrupt the load and must be coordinated with the site operator.
A replacement ATS must suit the current rating, fault level, supply configuration and control arrangement. Earthing and neutral switching require attention to the installation design. Automatic start is only possible where the generator supports the required control interface.
